		<script src="http://digg.com/tools/diggthis.js" type="text/javascript"></script></div><p>In an effort to cut response time for patients that are having a heart attack, ambulances are equipping themselves with advanced <em>EKG</em> technology so that they are able to recognize if a patient is having a severe heart attack. The most severe heart attack is known as an ST-elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI). This type of heart attack is when there is total blockage in a coronary artery. This program will enable EMR staff to immediately access a situation where time is of the utmost importance. A spokesperson from The American Heart Association (AMA) stated that implementing this type of program can prevent severe damage to the heart and ultimately save many lives.</p>
<p>The AMA has estimated that there are approximately 400,000 patients in the United States that are victims of STEMI each year. If emergency care is not performed within ninety minutes from the onset of STEMI, and the blockage in the heart is not eliminated, patients are likely to suffer from long term disability or death. The mission of this project is to equip as many ambulances as they can with twelve-lead electrocardiograms.</p>
<p>In rural areas, smaller hospitals are not equipped to do an emergency angioplasty. The time that it takes EMR professionals to transport a patient to a larger qualified hospital facility is crucial. With these newer <strong>EKG</strong>s, emergency medical workers are able to apply the leads to a patient and with a push of a button can immediately transmit EKG results to the receiving hospital. Emergency hospital staff can immediately begin to prepare for an angioplasty and are ready to begin medical treatment upon the patient’s arrival, with no additional EKG readings necessary. Previously, another <em>EKG</em> reading would be done when the patient reached the hospital.</p>
<p>The cost for each of these <strong>EKG machines</strong> will cost approximately twenty-five thousand dollars. Medical professionals believe that the cost is well worth the investment since research has proved that equipping ambulances with twelve-lead EKG machines can reduce anywhere from ten minutes to an hour of time that is needed for a patient to receive treatment and can ultimately save their lives.</p>

In keeping with their reputation as early-adopters, California was the first state to embrace the new iPad as a device to help healthcare workers view EKG results, X-ray images and other electronic patient information.</p>
<p>The innovation behind the iPad makes it simple for doctors to use on patient rotations because it serves as a virtual desktop.  Using application delivery software, physicians can have all patient information at their fingertips.  Instead of writing notes on a chart, this innovation makes them more productive while keeping patient information accurate and up-to-date.</p>
<p>Patients will be amazed by the level of technology the <strong><em>iPad</em></strong> affords their doctors and specialists.  Imagine being hooked up to an EKG machine and seeing the doctor view your results on his or her iPad in real-time.</p>
<p>Using an interface such as Citrix, these machines can capture the same data and records that are held within the hospital’s database of medical records.  As a result, a doctor who is viewing your current EKG results will be able to compare them with other previous tests, such as echocardiograms and stress tests without leaving your side.  And because your entire chart is also held within that same computer, the doctor can review other conditions you may have, or check for potential drug interactions.</p>
<p>If these new iPads prove to be successful for California hospitals, they will also distribute them to home health care workers, nurses, pharmacists and dieticians so they can all enter vital patient information in real-time.<br />
Who knows how long it will be before the rest of the medical community catches on to the <strong><em>iPad</em></strong> craze, but the next time you are hooked up to an EKG machine you might want to ask your doctor about it.</p>

Today, <strong><em>EKG machines</em></strong> are being used in hospitals and clinical environments throughout the world to measure stress and diagnose heart disease and how severe it may be. EKG machine tests are able to detect heart problems that may not be apparent while the heart is not under pressure to perform.</p>
<p>Patients are asked to wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing along with running or exercise shoes. Commonly, patients are required to participate in a warm up exercise routine prior to testing to help prevent cramping. Using <strong>EKG machines</strong> a Cardiologist and a technician conduct the test which monitors blood pressure while electrodes are attached to various areas on the patient’s chest. The EKG machine monitors heart rhythms to determine if it is steady or irregular. </p>
<p>While hooked up to the EKG machine, the patient either rides a stationary bike or walks on a treadmill. The test is able to monitor blood pressure, oxygen flow, and the heart rate of the patient. During the test, the physical exercise is progressively made more difficult which requires the heart to work harder. Patients commonly report dizziness, fatigue, and chest pain.</p>
<p><strong><em>EKG machines</em> </strong> stress tests are safe tests and pose little or no risk to the patients. They are less expensive than performing exploratory surgery. Another benefit to the patient that there is no recovery time as there would be from surgery.</p>

Their system, which is known as the Multifunction Cardiogram (MCG) is used to diagnose and detect the presence of myocardial ischemia, also known as angina.  The presence of this condition is caused by a temporary lack of oxygen rich blood within the heart.  In its most unstable state, myocardial ischemia is very dangerous and requires immediate medical treatment.</p>
<p>With upwards of seven million deaths occurring annually due to coronary artery disease, Premier Heart is interested in developing non-invasive testing that allows for the stress-free detection of this condition.  Their new MCG technology is more accurate in detecting myocardial ischemia early on, which makes it much easier for cardiologists to take interventional steps to save lives.</p>
<p>A radical departure from traditional testing on <strong><em>EKG machines</em></strong>, Premier’s MCG technology incorporates a mathematical model of the patient’s entire cardiac system, allowing doctors to derive more accurate information from one simple test.</p>
<p>MCG works by digitally recording a patient’s resting ECG data from an EKG machine, and then transmitting it to their data center via a secure Internet connection.  When this information arrives at the diagnostic system, a series of mathematical calculations are applied to it, which reveals a more dimensional picture of the patient’s heart functions.</p>
<p>The system then makes a diagnosis, as well as a specific set of existing conditions that may contribute to that diagnosis and guidelines for further treatment and testing.  Many physicians and cardiologists have added this multifunctional capability to augment the functionality of their existing <strong><em>EKG machines</em></strong>, which has contributed to a wider acceptance of MCG in the field of cardiology.</p>

<p>Some <strong><em>EKG machines</em></strong> use magnetic tape recorders in conjunction with printers, which are supplied by external manufacturers, but the computer microprocessors within these machines can be designed and manufactured alongside other internal components.</p>
<p>Using the latest techniques in electronic processing, EKG machines are technologically advanced in their design.  Both the output device and amplifier start with a circuit board, which has its own unique electronic configuration.  After passing through an assembly process where the appropriate diodes, chips and capacitors are stripped in, the circuitry is ready for the soldering of electronic components.  Once the process of filling in capillary spots with molten solder is complete, the board is cooled to allow the solder to harden in place.</p>
<p>One of the key elements of any <strong><em>EKG machine</em></strong> is its electrodes, the most common of which is the silver chloride electrode, because it remains stable with exposure to biological tissues.  In many cases, a selection of different types of electrodes will be included with one EKG machine, each with its own shielded cable for attachment to the main unit.</p>
<p>After all components of an EKG machine are in place and operable, but before it can be prepared for sale, it undergoes a series of visual and automated inspections to ensure it works properly.</p>

<p>As EKG testing has grown, so has its uses in medicine.  Patients are usually tested with an <strong><em>electrocardiogram</em></strong> when they exhibit the following symptoms:</p>
<p>* Fatigue or weakness<br />
* Shortness of breath<br />
* Chest pain<br />
* Racing or fluttering heart<br />
* Unusual sounds coming from the heart</p>
<p>Also, with people over 40, EKG testing is often used as a part of a routine medical exam, to screen patients for heart disease before symptoms begin.  Doctors are more likely to look for early signs of heart disease when a person has had a family history of the disease, especially if that history has occurred in their immediate family.  In addition to preventive testing, doctors will also use an <strong><em>EKG machine</em></strong> at routine doctors’ visits to find out how well a heart treatment or medication is working.</p>
<p>Using an EKG machine, doctors record a few minutes’ worth of heart signals at a time, and base their recordings on a 12-lead ECG.  The downside to this type of testing is that it only records a few minutes of time. Since so many heart conditions are not occurring all of the time, this type of test is insufficient in detecting these problems.  In cases like these, different types of <strong><em>EKG machine</em></strong> testing is done, including stress tests, Holter monitors and event monitors.  These tests are able to analyze heart rhythms over longer periods of time, or while the heart is under stress.</p>

They do this by detecting abnormal heart rhythms and unusual electrical impulses.  People with a history of heart disease are regularly tested by their cardiologist with an EKG test, which is done by strategically attaching electrodes to the patient’s body.  After a period of monitoring, the results of the test are shown on a computer monitor for the doctor to see, and then printed out or sent to a digital file for later review.</p>
<p>The best way to describe a doctor’s analysis of EKG / ECG testing is that they compare it to the way a healthy heart would look.  This is the easiest way for them to see differences in heart rhythm, heart rate and other patterns of the heart’s electrical impulses.  In cases where a patient’s heart shows abnormalities, additional testing is usually ordered to determine the nature of the problem, but first doctors will try to identify recurring patterns over time. </p>
<p>Heart rate is the first indicator that a doctor will look at, which can be seen my viewing the spikes and dips on the EKG graph.  The “P” spike is the first one, and it represents the impulses generated by the upper chamber of the heart.  The flatter of the two lines is the “PR” line, which represents the amount of time between the heart’s contraction and the relaxation of the atria.  In cases where this fluctuation happens too quickly, it is called atrial fibrillation.  By analyzing the results from <strong><em>EKG machines</em></strong>, doctors are able to quickly diagnose heart abnormalities and recommend medications and lifestyle changes. </p>

<p>Researchers at NICT expect this new device to be sold to medical practitioners who work with chronically ill heart patients and people who require extensive testing to diagnose a heart abnormality.  As the demand increases for this portable EKG monitor, global medical equipment manufacturers are expected to offer devices like this at more competitive prices.  Look for more information to be released by NICT as the product completes its final round of clinical trials.</p>
