Supplemental Analysis Can Expand The Capabilities Of EKG Machines
In response to the growing need for faster and more accurate detection of heart disease, a company called Premier Heart has developed a new approach to the ECG. Their system, which is known as the Multifunction Cardiogram (MCG) is used to diagnose and detect the presence of myocardial ischemia, also known as angina. The presence of this condition is caused by a temporary lack of oxygen rich blood within the heart. In its most unstable state, myocardial ischemia is very dangerous and requires immediate medical treatment.
With upwards of seven million deaths occurring annually due to coronary artery disease, Premier Heart is interested in developing non-invasive testing that allows for the stress-free detection of this condition. Their new MCG technology is more accurate in detecting myocardial ischemia early on, which makes it much easier for cardiologists to take interventional steps to save lives.
A radical departure from traditional testing on EKG machines, Premier’s MCG technology incorporates a mathematical model of the patient’s entire cardiac system, allowing doctors to derive more accurate information from one simple test.
MCG works by digitally recording a patient’s resting ECG data from an EKG machine, and then transmitting it to their data center via a secure Internet connection. When this information arrives at the diagnostic system, a series of mathematical calculations are applied to it, which reveals a more dimensional picture of the patient’s heart functions.
The system then makes a diagnosis, as well as a specific set of existing conditions that may contribute to that diagnosis and guidelines for further treatment and testing. Many physicians and cardiologists have added this multifunctional capability to augment the functionality of their existing EKG machines, which has contributed to a wider acceptance of MCG in the field of cardiology.
